Can UPI credit card payments be reversed partially

Santosh Kumar

UPI credit card payments are usually not partially reversible once completed. However, merchants may process a partial refund if the payment amount needs adjustment or if a product or service is partially returned. The refund goes back to the attached credit card based on the merchant’s refund policy.

What The UPI Credit Card Transactions Look Like

UPI credit card payments marry the convenience of UPI with the credit facility of a credit card. When a user links an eligible credit card to a UPI app, payments are done via QR codes or UPI IDs similar to standard UPI transactions.

But instead of taking money out of your bank account, the amount is billed to your credit card. The user then pays it back during the credit card cycle. It works through the UPI network of the National Payments Corporation of India. The network routes payments in real time from the customer’s issuing bank to the merchant’s bank.

Because UPI transactions are designed to be real-time and final, they usually cannot be reversed once authorised by the user.

Why it’s not simply possible to partially reverse

Unlike credit card transactions where a merchant may be able to change a transaction amount prior to settlement, UPI payments are made instantaneously once a user enters their UPI PIN.

Once completed, the amount is forwarded to the merchant’s account and logged. Now, you cannot parse or partially undo the initial transaction.

If a customer has paid more than required or wants to cancel part of a purchase, the merchant must initiate a separate refund transaction. This refund could be a complete or partial refund of the original payment. For UPI credit card payments, this refunded amount is put back to the credit card account instead of the bank account.

What about when a merchant issues a refund

When a merchant refunds a UPI credit card payment, it moves through the same payments ecosystem that facilitated the original transaction.

The refund comes via the UPI network of National Payments Corporation of India and makes its way to the credit card issuer. After it’s processed, the refunded amount shows up in the credit card statement.

Depending on the bank and merchant system, the refund may take a few hours to several working days to reflect. In the meantime, the transaction might be pending in the payment app.

Consumers need to be aware as well that refunds go towards diminishing the owed balance on the credit card — not for direct cash in the bank account.

What users should do if there’s an incorrect payment

If a user observes that they’ve made the wrong UPI credit card payment amount, they should first reach out to the merchant. Because the payment is uneditable, it’s up to the merchant to refund.

Clients need to hold on to some sort of evidence that they paid, be it screen shots, transaction IDs, or payment confirmation messages. These particulars assist merchants follow the transaction fast.

If the merchant does not refund within the expected time, the customer will have an option to escalate a complaint via their UPI app or bank. Almost all UPI apps have a transaction dispute facility which enables users to report payment related issues.

Keeping correct transaction details and reporting issues quickly can help settle disputes more effectively.
